Megadeth - Hangar 18 - Guitar Cover (All Solos) by John Nuckols

Here is my cover of Hangar 18 by Megadeth. The duel guitar solos were a blast to learn and perform, as I tried to stay as close to the original as I could. The main lead part was performed live along with the actual STEM tracks from the Megadeth recording. The audio was one take w/ a blend of three video takes. Mustaine said "for the Rust in Peace record we had the secret weapon , Marty Friedman came into the band"
Cant hear anything
Take the scorpion from megadeth, 44minutes from megadeth and moth into the flame from Metallica. Then merge it all with malmsteen taste.. and voila! brutal
All huge compliments!! Thanks for checking it out! New Dark Fantasia songs will come out later this year.
Just returned to this one after a long time and it's still epic! Not just the technique to play all the solos but the memory required for them all too...
Is it just me or did you fall just slightly behind the beat during the ascending section in the solo at 3:41? (Really nice job, btw)
AWESOME 🖤🤘
Megadeth Forever!!!
Awesome cover brother. Greetings from Montréal!
brilliant - one of my fave solos - together with the deiicide komage for satan solo - I do not know it it is me,..... slightly off tuned guitar - but your command of the 6 strings is good/awesome. much better than I was
Full Combo master difficulty. Nice
the thrash metal song whith impossible power metal solos
You're playing the next riff too early
Awesome 👏
3:13 best part
Great man...❤ Nice guitar and tone.. subscribed to your channel man..👍
You are a freak of nature on that guitar! A beast! I am speechless.
Como vc ousa tirar a voz do dave?! mas toca bem, hehe.
do you usually listen by ear to learn these songs? if so, what does that process look like? (picking out the melody, finding the key, etc.)
Yes, and that's exactly what I do. For this song there are some great tabs so I didn't have to totally start from scratch though. Also you can find the isolated lead guitar tracks online so those were tremendously useful as well. I load them into a program called transcribe and would loop and slow down sections to figure out exactly what is going on. But I would absolutely recommend always analyzing everything you play: what chord is being played and what scale and key you are in. If you do this with everything you learn you will develop your ear tremendously. When working things out I would also suggest to sing back what you are trying to play - if you can't imitate it vocally you might not have the part in your head just yet.
Dave's solos are a bit chaotic and somewhat sloppy, so I use the tabs to get an idea of what he playing but you have to really just listen and go for the vibe of what he was playing. He likes to do a lot of repeating sequences which helps. Marty is more melodic and really targets chord tones. But Marty doesn't like to repeat obvious sequences in a way like Dave might and likes to add lots of interesting outside notes. Marty's bends and vibrato are super expressive and that can't really be notated precisely in tab anyway so you have to listen to the track a lot and just imitate it as best you can. The vibrato is a huge part of his melodic playing and I really learned a ton from after figuring out this song.
@@JohnNuckols thank you for the detailed reply =) i’m gonna look into transcribing programs like the one you’ve mentioned ♡ still on my ear training journey but basic music theory has helped by giving me some direction. i appreciate you
As a fanatic metalhead and guitar player I must admit that I instantly started to search who you are and how much albums I missed.
What a song... 10/10
Thanks so much! Working on some new songs for this summer
This looks pretty fuckin easy. ....but as a player. I know it's just this dude who makes it look effortless!! Incredible playing, man!!
so many views but very few subscribers. you deserve more bro. subbed. come on guys show him some love
Bro, you're awesome you deserve more subscribers, keep it up. and I want some more Megadeth covers please
I feel like the neck beard is a product of the time spent learning this .
Hell yeah john!!! 😈😈😈😈
Nice guitar as well
Thank you!
Damn son.... You killed it 👹👹👹👽👹👹👹
Fantastic!
Hey man I think you forgot to make this look hard
wow
pretty standard yet very cool guitar... love it
To my ears that was dead on. 🔥
Impressive, very nice!
fuckin A
so much control in those bends. i need lessons from you haha
It's all about the bends and vibrato! I can do it better now, this song really helped improve my technique. Also, I do give virtual lessons. Would love to teach Megadeth solos.
@@JohnNuckols I would love that :) how can I organise it?
@@aidanhoney3567 awesome! Sorry for the delay, shoot me an email at johnnuckolsmusic@gmail or message me on fb messenger.
Y fuckin' rock
Really freaking awesome dude! So enjoyable to watch you shred one of the great Megadeth songs!
Almost identical except you aren't holding your pick and curling your picking hand around the strings all weird where it looks as though you should be getting wrist and forearm cramps. Other than that, it sounds perfect! Great work!
Fuckin NAILED IT!!!! Impressive AF!!!!!
Insane
What I don't like in covers like this, is that they are pre-recorded and what I see is just a dude doing a playthrough essentially. What I want to see, is not you playing over a pre-recorded track, one that you've make 100 takes until you recorded it perfectly. I want to see you playing it live in 1 take. For example at 2:01 it is clear that this is just prerecorded.
So this was recorded in one take from start to finish three times with two different cameras. The audio is 100% from one single continuous take, and about 90% of the video is also from that take. There are a few parts where the video is from one of the other takes. I only had limited time with the camera man, and he edited the video himself so I didn’t have time to do a million different takes. There’s actually quite a few mistakes I would’ve fixed if I was just punching in. The second Dave solo is late, I’m not happy with vibrato on a lot of the Marty solos, the sixteenth note scale run isn’t very tight, and also I realized later that I’m playing some of the riffs slightly different than how Megadeth them. I’ll give a single camera angle live take a go though. I need to relearn some parts but I know I can play this much better now. Thanks for the critique.
@@JohnNuckols Thanks for the reply man. Actually you are very good guitarist and you did great job, both on the sound and expression! It just seemed like I'm watching a movie (pre-recorded) sound with just overlay video. If that's not the case, and as you say, it was recorded 3 times then congrats! Also, Marty's vibratos are insane, but your interpretation was quite good.
@@haruccigr thanks so much! Yeah, it does look like it is just a play through. I think there’s a tiny delay with the video and audio too, or maybe the very first solo was part of a different take because that doesn’t look right to me. That’s also why I want to do a more live looking one. I understand not being into that those punched in covers, I don’t like them either. Cheers man! If you have time check out my original song “August Moon” on my channel. It has some Marty-esq solos you may like.
Not to compare bands, but Marty Friedman makes Kirk Hammett look like a white guy with an acoustic guitar
Yeah there’s no comparison though Hammett did come with some cool leads for the time. Especially on “And Justice for All.” Marty kinda also blows away Dave in my opinion too.
@@JohnNuckols yeah I can agree with that, there's definitely a reason Dave sticks to Rhythm and it isn't because he's a good vocalist lol
SWEET. You nailed it. :)
Ok....thats just so good it pisses me off. Damn!
Man, one day I want to be able to play it with all the solos
Killed it! it was so exactly perfect!
Brother, that intro solo was so awesome, Jason Becker vibes all the way!
Thanks so much for checking it out! Becker’s vibrato, bar use and just aggressive expression definitely an inspiration for this!
@@JohnNuckols my pleasure, brother, got a new sub <3
Did you play this in a way that cut the parts that Dave's singing on shorter to get to the solos quicker, because if so, that's badass. Makes it more enjoyable for people that wanna hear the Marty vs Dave solos.
It's amazing to nail it in one shot cover. Interesting how many times you had to take a shot, man.
The whole song is basically a solo
